I'm sorry to hear that your journey and experiences have been disappointing with the product.
My experiences, especially those over the last 5 years have been very positive and solid. It's helped that I have also had laptops with very cooperative wireless network chipsets as well. My desktops with NIC cards themselves have been a piece of cake. I'm pretty much as comfortable setting up a Linux desktop as a Windows desktop these years. And once the Linux box is running, there is very, very little in terms of ongoing maintenance to keep it running that way.
I usually have 1 gaming type more powerful machine at home running Windows that I can use for my tricky hardware. For my other 2-3 boxes...they usually just run Linux as it's free, stable, fast, nearly bulletproof and pretty light on resources.
