Your notebook will still work with tower unpluged from router.

    What repairs have you tried?

    Hello.. thanks for your reply.
Here is what has been tried:
I called my DSL.. sbcglobal.. then got an upper Tech guy.(.pay for this only /service)
We tried to get the pc to boot up..making a few clicks.. no go.
Next.. he had me to turn it off and on.. tapping the F8 key repeatedly.. no go..
Next.. more stating and stopping..finally he decided to try the boot mode..
when the black screen appeared.. he had me to use the up and down keys to get to the middle line ( of 3 choices).. had me type in a few key strokes..hit enter...Next.. a page of things related to Windows appeared filling my screen.. Then nothing else..
Next ..same thing.. back to the black screen..this time we tried the botton line.. hit enter..nothing happened...
He said " your going to have to take the tower to your tech guy.. have him back it up.. on Cd's.. to let you have.. then call us back we'll walk you through the installing.
That's it... for this service he wants $114. dollars.. on my credit card..
He isn't getting that kind of money for that bit of work !!!.. I'll call my credit card and ask the to put a hold on those charges.. !!! till furter notice.
Thank you so very much for your help.

Do you have Win XP install CD? (Not the Gateway Recovery disk as this a Norton Ghost Disk)

Lets get one thing straight. Have you a combined modem/router and is your PC connected to the roiuter by a ethernet cable? Have you seen a screen giving you a choice of booting ie can you get into Safe Mode?

LPT... I would download a copy of Ubuntu, burn as an image file and boot from the cd.... Choose the "Try Ubuntu without making any changes to my pc" ... this will load ubuntu without actually installing it... You will then be able to backup your files to cd's, then proceed with a reinstall of Windows XP... be sure to download the necessary drivers and burn them to a cd as well... Let us know if you need help... Good Luck!

Do not use that disk, until you have backup your data.

Take a look at Tews post.
