40% of this is 40 units.
still with me?

we increase the 40 units by 175% (175% of the 40 units).
first off, what are we doing?
we are adding an additional 175% of these 40 units to this amount.
40 * 1.75 (we all agree here 1.75 = 175%) = 70 (can be checked with a calculator for those who are slower)
this is the amount we are adding to the original 40 units.
so:
original units + 175% of those units = new total units
40 + 70 = 110 units now total.

That makes sense except your math is wrong.

40% of 100 units is 40, yes.
If you increase that by 175%, you are multiplying it by 1.75
40*1.75=70.

YOU DON'T ADD IT BACK.

To show you the error in your reasoning, answer for me please two questions:

1. If 70% represents a 175% increase from 40% in your world, what would a 100% increase from 40% be?
2. If you earn £40 an hour and get a 75% pay rise, what would you expect to be paid now?

Take my word for it - if you have 40 of anything and increase them by 175%, you'll now have 110 of them

Alright, if you want to imply that the 100% is INCLUDED in the raise, then YES, you are right.

In this case, I still think my logic holds true. 2 entirely different cases, both correct.

if you increase 40 by 50%, are you saying you only have 20? Highly unlikely, you end up with 60. (40 + (.50 * 40)) = 60

I am saying that 175% more efficient means that is is essentially 75% more efficient by your logic.
