Your computer may freeze or restart to a black screen

Your computer may freeze or restart to a black screen that has a "0xc0000034" error message after you install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or a Windows Vista service pack
Consider the following scenario. You install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or a Windows Vista service pack on your computer. After the service pack is installed, the computer may freeze or restart. If the computer restarts, you receive an error message that resembles the following on a black screen:

    Computer Freeze-up

I realize this is an old thread but it describes my problem. However, there is NO remedy in the original posting for a PC that has frozen up.

I am using my old PC with XP. My new PC is a Dell Inspiron 560 with Win7.

This a.m. when I booted up there was a message that one important and some score of lesser updates were available. I clicked to install the important one.

A short time later I got the Reboot now? message and clicked Yes.

Shortly after that I got a "Shutting Down" message. That stayed on the screen for a long time, even after I left home for a hour or more.

No key I touched or mouse movement would budge it. In desperation I powered down. Now the d*mn thing won't come back. I have even unplugged the whole setup and get just a black screen when I connect back. I can't even hear the harddrive spinning when I put my ear to the tower.

I think it needs a Cardioversion (paddle job). I really can't afford to lose the links and other things I have transferred to the new PC as there is no turning back. My nephew deleted them from the old when they were working on the new.

Fortunately, my main files haven't been downloaded from Carbonite to the new PC yet.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!!!!!

I discovered that I had no power to the disk drives - they wouldn't open. So I called Dell and had a heck of a time understanding the Oriental accent. Finally after pressing the power button on the tower enough times to break it the system woke up. A White on Black screen had a message about W7 shutting down abruptly (my word). There was something about recovery but before I could read the whole screen the message disappeared.

W7 came back and finished configuring the Service Pack and everything seems OK.

Lesson: don't give up when pressing a button that seems inoperative.
