Hi I am new to these threads so bear with me. This morning I tried to start my laptop and it wouldn't start. My computer gave me the option to use Windows startup recovery. After using it. I ended up losing everything on my hardrive. And I also lost windows 7 and went back to Vista. I am wondering if there is a way to recover everything. I just recently moved also and don't have my windows 7 upgrade disk or office 2007. I am completely paniking right now and dont know what to do.

EDIT: darn I must be a slow typer today.

The software he recommended should get your data back (documents, musics, videos), but with out an install disc I don't think you can get Windows 7 back. It sounds like your HDD had a recovery partition for Vista, which reinstalled the factory settings on the main partition. I would recommend having someone mail you your 7 upgrade and Office 2007 media.

Nope. Trying using what Arc suggested or try Zero Assumption Recovery. All these programs work as long as the startup recovery hasn't over written the files. recovery discs wipe out everything and install the OS when you first bought it. Next time back up all your files.

An alternative would be replace the hard drive with a new one, run the recovery disc and put the old hard drive in a USB enclosure. Then you could have copied all your data over.

Good luck.

The more I read threads like this or have my own problems, I feel my external HDD was the best investment I ever made. Since then I've had a HDD fail on me, and it didn't even phase me. I don't do images of my HDD in case I backup a virus or something, but I have backed up all my personal files plus driver installers, all user data for my web browser, and an image of my Win7 DVD (in case I lose the original). I even installed Ubuntu on a partition on it. If you can afford one, it is a great thing to know you have everything in a safe place.

Ya I bought my CPU while Vista was out right before 7. So I was able to get the free upgrade.

What I do is have two sets of drive. I clone my working drives to my back up drives with clonezilla.
