Windows 7 - nvlddmkm.sys BSOD, low color depth, no Aero

When I awoke today, I was greeted by a blue screen involving nviddmkm.sys, and when I rebooted, all of the settings were cockeyed on my monitors.

I have squared everything, except that I'm stuck with 16 bit color depth and the basic theme, instead of Aero. The theme problem is due to the low color depth and that appears to be due to the Windows Desktop Display Service not functioning properly, however checking in Services, it is reported as functioning properly. I restarted the service, but that had no effect.

I attempted to do a System Restore, but it says that there are no restore points available. The only thing left that comes to mind is reinstalling the Nvidia driver, but I wanted to touch base here first.

Any other ideas?

Of course check your video for newest drivers.

Look at Device Manager. Any yellow warnings?

And for good measure, run a virus and malwarebytes scan in safe mode.

I didn't post the crash report, because I thought that was no longer relavent, however I'm attaching it now. No notations in the Device Manager, and it just so happens that I ran Malwarebytes yesterday, without any problems. I am running the latest Nvidia driver (258.96).

Do you have two system, or one with BFG 7800GT/**EVGA 8800GT?

If two, swap your cards just to see if it's resolved. Your psu is powerful enough, so that's not a factor. The card certainly can handle Aero, let alone high rez.

Another thought. If the driver has been corrupted, you can get into safe mode, totally uninstall the driver, reboot and install new driver.

So i'm thinking hardware problem or corrupted driver. especially since it happened out of the blue.

When I thought that all was fixed, I found another problem...now, I no longer have dualview between my monitors. In the Nvidia Control Panel, there are only two options regarding the relationship of the monitors...either to clone using one monitor as the primary or the other. Previously, I could move the mouse cursor between the monitor without any restriction, but now I have to use an extra program to do so (M3 Multi Mouse). How do I get it back as it was?
