I visited a site that gave me a virus before. I had just installed avast antivirus and wanted to see if it worked bad idea. When at this site a small java window opened and the laptop shut down. No programs would respond explorer 64 bit was the only program that would run but adobe flash player would not. I reset the system to the day before the problem arose but that did not work. Any ideas I'm pretty bad with computers.

Can you boot into safe mode? For that you need to tap F8 repeatedly at boot. Run avast in safe mode. If you have access to another computer, download freeware malwarebytes antimalware, then copy it to the infected computer's hard disk via a usb stick and run it, run in safe mode if you cant work at all in regular mode.

You can also try running an antivirus rescue disk. See here.

Instead of booting to normal safe mode, boot into safe mode with command prompt. Then navigate to the directory where avast is installed and run the exe. You can also navigate to the optical drive from the command prompt.
