PLEASE HELP!! I did a disk cleanup yesterday and I just clicked ok, and it deleted the normal things it does and i think this is when it might have happened. i also had a public folder as a user and i deleted it thinking i did not need it, and i think this may have had something to do with it. i have searched for remedies and have tried a few. the best i can do is get the icon showing, but it is covered up with an icon that is a blue outline box with a red dot and green dot in it.

I am attaching a screen shot so you can see what i am talking about.

Please Help Me.

The problem appears to be specific to your user account. At least that's what I'm guessing given the way you describe the problem. It loads properly then reverts when user account settings are loaded.

Is there another user account on the machine you could check that theory with for me?

Curious, I'll take a page from the microsoft technet on this step.
If the issue persists, there might be conflict with certain program running background. I would suggest test the issue in clean boot.

This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Refer to How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
===============
1. Click the Start Button and type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Search Box and press Enter.
2. Click Continue to verify the permission.
3. Select the Services tab in the open window. Check the “Hide all Microsoft Services” option and click Disable All.
4. Switch to the Startup tab and click Disable All.
5. Click OK to save the settings and select Restart when prompted.
6. Check whether or not the issue still occurs. Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't adversely affect the system or other programs. We can still manually run these programs later.

This means a application you are running is interfering with you desktop icons somehow. It would more than likely be something you have installed recently.

The long way to troubleshoot this would be to start re-enabling the items we removed with that last step one at a time, until the problem occurs again.
This would point to the culprit.

Trend micro itself could possibly be the problem. It's rare but sometimes third party av/security suites cause issues with some win 7 machines.
Assuming your windows is legit. You can just use microsoft security essentials in its place. In that scenario I would also get the free version of malwarebytes antimalware and scan manually now and then.
