Serious issue - "You have been logged on with a temporary profile"?

Hey all,

I've run into a surprising issue, and its a very serious problem. On the family laptop (my personal laptop is working just fine, lol), I created a user account for everyone, four accounts, three administrators, and one limited. One of the account stays logged on most of the time and is still logged on, and right now unfortunately is the only account working. I switched users and logged onto another account, and to my surprise, it said "Preparing your desktop....", and then, all the personal settings were erased, and I got a message saying "You have been logged on with a temporary profile". I immediately thought "Oh ****, this is bad." I tried logging onto another account, and received the same results. All of the other three accounts now log on with a temporary profile error message, except the account I'm in now, which is still like its supposed to be, because it hasn't been logged off. This is the main account, has a crapload of e-mails all organized in Outlook 2010, crapload of documents, pictures, and desktop files that I have taken a hell of a long time to restore. The last thing I would want is to log-off and find that all this is thrown away. I deleted all the other three accounts, because they were now useless. This has pissed me off quite a bit, and I'd like to find a solution ASAP. I have no clue how this happened, I haven't changed any settings or installed anything new. Can I not rely on Windows 7 to keep all my settings like XP did with no problem?

Windows 7 is really starting to piss me off now.....including not being able to share a printer in homegroup, along with this obscure error.

Is there a fix for all this? I really don't want to revert back to XP .......

Not if it works. Be sure to create backups as noted in the tutorial though to make recovery easier if it doesn't work though.

Yeah Windows 7 is running really great now, turns out the issue with the printer was I forgot to install Java LOL .....

Unfortunately....this same problem has come up again. It worked for maybe a day, and then it happened again. The main admin account that has not had the problem and still hasn't lost anything (that's because it hasn't been logged off)....but I don't want to log it off just in case this happens to that account, and its very important that I do not lose everything on that account. The .bak keys in the registry showed up again...after deleting them yesterday, no clue why its happening, I deleted them and it worked, but then it showed up again

Is there a permanent fix for this, its a really irritating issue and something that is very very important to get fixed as soon as possible. I still feel like I can't trust Windows 7 ....

Just curious...do you think that Microsoft ForeFront Endpoint Protection and IE9 would have something to do with this?

With it happening again like this, you may be better off backing up anything that you do not want to lose ASP while you still have access in that account. Afterwards reinstall Windows 7. If your accounts are corrupted, then you don't want to risk losing everything one day.

You're sure there's not another fix for it? Because I followed your tutorial exactly on doing a clean install and it took a hell of a long time to backup and restore everything .....

You could try creating a new administrator account to see how it may work instead. I would still recommend to backup anything that you do not want to lose to be safe though.

I think Shawn is correct it's best to reinstall Windows to avoid this problem from happening.

Okay fine, might as well just do a reinstall....backup everything using SyncToy, what about the e-mail configuration though? I had Outlook 2010 configured perfectly with POP3 and gmail, a couple of personal folders...is all I need to do is backup the "[email protected]" pst file in the Outlook Files folder?

I don't use Outlook, so you might post a new thread on that one in the Browsers & Mail forum area.

Just thought of something....do you thinik a repair install would work? That would save all my files, right?

It may work if you have a retail copy of Windows 7 installed, but with the corruption, you would be better off with a clean install.

I would still recommend to backup anything that you do not want to lose first to be safe though.

Okay, might as well, I've got the entire afternoon to do it anyway lol. Before I start I'm going to backup everything using SyncToy and print out your clean install tutorial to make sure I do everything correctly
