Black Screen Flash for 2-3 seconds after initial login (after bootup)

I have tried to make sense of what others have posted and relate it to my situation but I am still somewhat confused because I have not found the same exact issue I have. I have tried a number of config settings but no joy.

I am running W7 Ult 64bit OS and have a Nvidia Quadro NVS 285...

I am not sure how long this has been occurring (possibly since OS install) but every time I bootup and then login with my password, the screen flashes black for 2-3 seconds after the initial login. If I log off and log on with my pswd, it does not always flash.

I have the most current driver for the Nvidia card.

Does anyone know why this is occurring? Is it a typical glitch

Many users here have a problem of their screens flashing (or flickering, or blinking) black after Windows loads. I've seen people blame everything from audio drivers to integrated graphics for this issue, however these are not the causes.

Microsoft has a service called Transient Multimon Manager (TMM). This (supposedly) makes it easier to run multiple displays. It also causes the annoying flash we all hate so much. It took me hours to pinpoint the exact process (which happened to be the Task Scheduler Engine), and even more time to pinpoint the exact task, so enjoy.

Here's how to fix that annoying black flicker on boot:

1. Click on the Start button (pearl? ball? orb?).
2. Type "Task Scheduler" and hit Enter.
3. On the left-hand side, click "Task Scheduler Local" (you should already be there, but just in case).
4. Expand "Task Scheduler Library," then "Microsoft," then "Windows," then click "MobilePC."
5. Up top, you'll see a task called "TMM." Click it, and on the right-hand side, click "Disable."
6. You're done.

I am running one monitor.
AV is Norton 360, I do have Malware Bytes Free installed and some other free and trial programs (that I only run manually, once a month). Its seems like this flash has been occurring before the installs as well.

Can you direct me, how to check if a program is loading (or doing something) to cause the 2 second black screen flash...? I have looked in msconfig "startup" nothing looks out of the ordinary to me (but I may have overlooked something). I will admit that I have not gone thru disable/restart for each and every startup item or service to investigate further, but I have read a lot about this problem.

I am wondering if this is something I am just going to have to live with...?

I have read the post you included however I don't show TMM in the Mobile PC folder (btw I have a Dell Desktop with OS W7 Ult 64)... the only thing showing in Mobile PC folder is "Hot Start".

BTW I did a clean install of the original W7 Ult 64 OS disc in a VM in VMware.... And (drum roll) I get the same black screen flash after login, so it appears that straight out of the box W7 came with the glitch.

When is MS going to create a modular OS so that you can just add/install the parts that you want? I think there is just too much going on after login which causes the problem or the code is not very good.

you can go into MSCONFIG and choose selective startup which will load only the necessary MS files and see if the flash continues. Then you will need to go back and start enabling things one at a time and see if the flash re-appears

Thx, I am familiar with this troubleshooting tactic... I was actaually thinking about something else, but I will give it a shot when I have time, for now I will just live with it. It could be a hw issue too, I am thinking.

I found something interesting about how to disable TMM in Windows 7. You have to change it in the Registry.

1. Open Windows 7 registry editor by clicking Start, type regedit.
2. Right click on regedit, click on Run as Administartor.
3. Navigate to the location: (Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\TMM))
4. Click UseIViewHelper in the right pane.
5. Set the value data to “0” {zero} to disable TMM feature in Windows 7.
6. If you want to re-enable TMM feature, set the value data to “1”.
7. Click OK and reboot you computer for the changes to take effect.
