I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this but, ever since I reformatted my laptop, it randomly freezes for about a second and a stuttering noise comes up. Then the screen turns black. It doesn't shut off because I could see the back light, it just turns completely black. What's causing this problem and how do I fix it? I checked the Event Logger and there are tons of errors and some critical kernal-power things.

Oh, and the kernel-power errors just mean that your computer was not properly shut down. It's not good that they are reoccurring as often as they are, but we need to find the underlying reason for this. A black screen typically means a display card driver, so do the steps in my previous post.

Re-install all codec packs you are currently using, especially the DivX pack.

I don't know if this is related, but I also note event ID 7001, and the solution posed by Microsoft is posed in Event ID 7001 Is Logged in the System Event Log

Double-click NetBIOS over Tcpip. <--- That's one of the steps but I don't seem to have that in my non plug and play drivers section of Device Manager.

Alright, then you may want to run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html (run up to three times to fix all errors if there is any corruption) to check for system file corruption.

Looks good. Not sure what is causing 7001 then. There was someone else on here having startup issues due to that, and it's a tough one to track down. I'll look into it further. Go through the other steps I gave and see if you can get back and running again.

Looks like it may be a dependency issue for one of your services. I would have to see the full error to know what the root cause is, though. Can you double click on the error and give me the dialog for it?

To resolve this, we need to open Services. Open Services and repair it as follows.
  1. Click Start Menu
  2. Type Services into Search programs and files (do not hit enter)
  3. Right click Services and click Run as administrator
  4. Once in services, find the Network Location Awareness service.
  5. Click on the Dependencies tab
  6. Make a note of each service in the top white space (write them down, put them in notepad, etc.)
  7. Find each service
  8. Right click it and click Properties
  9. In the General tab, make sure the startup type is set to Automatic.
  10. Check the Dependencies tab for each of the services that Network Location Awareness depends on.
  11. Make sure those dependencies are also set to startup type: Automatic.

The above might take a while depending on how many services there are due to dependencies.

Basically, you want all dependencies to be set to startup automatically, and all of their dependencies to startup automatically, and all of the dependencies of the dependencies of the dependencies to be set to startup automatically, etc.

Every service seems normal, all of them are set to automatic except for the ones that don't have a component that depends on them.

Are you able to run Windows normally now? You may try a clean startup to see if it stops the error, as well. Could be an application interfering with the services.

My laptop runs fine, it's just that the screen randomly turns black. It would freeze for a second and it would also make a stuttering noise, then it would turn it black. I'll try the clean startup
