Please help! I have a Toshiba Satellite C655-S5132 that just shut down & now will not boot Windows 7. Just goes to black screen w/blinking cursor then goes to 'startup repair' (which I'm postiive this is a virus of somekind) & will not allow me to do anything. Just repeats itself. I downloaded Win7 repair to a CD-R, chgd BIOS settings to CD/DVD to boot first, saved changes, and will NOT pull/boot up from disc. I've tried 2diff repair discs, both do not work. 'F8' does not do anything for me, not able to get to 'safe mode'. Computer is only 2yrs old.

okay... my comp just got back to this screen... it showed me this once before but when I hit enter for highlighted 'windows 7' it just went right back to the 'startup repair' problem screen... then it came up again, I tried 'F8' and still went back to the 'startup repair' problem screen... I now have my comp back at this screen that says 'Windows Boot Manager' has 'choose operating sys...." and "windows 7" is highlighted... halfway down screen shows "to specify an advanced option for this choise, press F8'... Then says 'Tools' Windows Memory DIagnosic'... (thanks for helping!)

As far as I'm aware you need to insert your boot disc and restart your computer. Tap the F12 key for the boot options and select the DVD-ROM drive.

I'm still having problems... if anyone knows of something I can do to get this fixed or even my computer wiped clean to its original state? I am now running the 'Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool' to see if that does or tells me anything...

You can wipe the computer, but you will lose any data. Is this a viable option? If so, turn off the computer, hold down the zero key, turn on the computer while still holding down the zero key, and continue holding the zero key down until the factory recovery starts.

I would like to save what I have on my computer... but I can't get anything to work... so if the only way to get it back working is to wipe it clean, I will... Will I still have the programs on my computer? Windows, Mircosoft, etc...?

The method I mentioned restores it to the factory system image. It will be as it was when you first bought it and you will lose any programs and files added since you bought it. You could try downloading and burning PartedMagic and using the steps in Backup Files Using PartedMagic to backup your computer. You may be able to boot PartedMagic even though you cannot boot a Windows DVD, but I can't promise anything if it is the drive that has failed and not just some problem with booting from your DVD.

Reset your CMOS and BIOS hardware/software connections.

  1. Go into your BIOS and load default settings to clear the CMOS memory.
  2. Save Settings and exit the BIOS.
  3. Shut down and turn off the computer.
  4. Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
  5. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
  6. (If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall.
  7. Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware, and post back your results.

See if you can boot from your CD/DVD after setting the CD/DVD drive as the first boot device again through the BIOS.

ok, to be clear my computer says to hit F2 for BIOS, at the top it says InsydeH20 Setup Utility, on the 'exit' tab it has 'load setup defaults' but does not give me an option to 'clear the CMOS memory'?

Load setup defaults will clear the CMOS. Further reading: How To Clear CMOS (Reset BIOS)

I did the System Restore and rcvd a message saying it was successful & to restart... I hit restart and when it comes back up it brings me back to 'system recovery options' and takes me back through the same process I just did? I did that 2x. 3rd time I hit 'cancel' and says 'are you sure you want to exit & restart your computer'. I hit 'yes', it restarts and brings me right back to 'system recovery options' again...?
