Windows 7 - BSODs with multiple errors. Can't log into Windows.

Last night, I downloaded and played the Diablo 3 beta for my first time. When I got in game, i noticed that every time I tried to move my character, the game would freeze up like 10 seconds. Because this was happening I tried to restart the game. Turns out that didn't help so i proceeded to trying to restart my computer to see if that would help, but as the screen was at the part where it shows that you are logging off, I got a BSOD.

I have gotten BSODs before, and simply had to restart while on them to get the computer to run normally, but this time when I got the BSOD and tried to usual method of restarting, I kept getting BSODs that automatically restarted the computer again in an infinite loop of BSODs. To stop it from automatically restarting after the BSODs, I hit the option to make it not auto restart after the BSOD so I can get a look at what it actually said. I noticed that when i was getting the BSODs, the error messages weren't always the same. Some said things like "SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION" and "BAD_POOL_HEADER."

I also noticed that the number and letters at the bottom weren't the same with every BSOD. Since I am unable to access to my computer's desktop, I couldn't pull a proper log of the errors so I had so i just went ahead and read some and wrote them down by hand (sorry if there is actually a way to get them still, but this the only thing else I know of.)

Here are some of the error messages I got:

After writing this one down, I didn't bother writing anymore or even checking to see if they were different as I kept restarting in desperation that it would eventually work properly. Wasn't sure if I was getting the same errors at times, or if I was getting a different message every single time.

My system specs:

Windows 7 64 bit from retail disc.
4GB RAM
CPU: AMD Phenon II x4 965
Video Card: ATi Sapphire Radeon 5870
500GB Western Digital HDD
Had system since 2010.

Things I have tried to see it would help:

-Let the computer rest. Kept it off all night after the BSODs and only tried to see if it would start up right this morning.

-Unplugged everything I could and replugged them.

-Took out RAM and video card them put them back in.

-Took out video card and used onboard graphics.

-Dusted out everything.

-Safe mode

-Last working point option (it was worded differently I think)

-Startup Repair didn't help although it did send info to Microsoft or something.

-Tried to use the repair disk but it never booted up even when I was able to get to the desktop for about 5 seconds in Safe Mode.

-System restore

None of these seemed to help unfortunately. I have my Windows 7 CD and can get to a Command Prompt from there.

I was not trying to say that I think this is Diablo 3's fault, only mentioned it because that was the last thing I was on before trying to restart and getting the first BSOD that lead into the loop.

The above highlighted parameter is indicative of a memory exception (either ram or a driver) since you installed Diablo 3 beta I am thinking it is a driver but since we cant get the DMPS we cant be sure.

You might want to pull all but one stick of ram and try to boot into safe mode (again). If that works we can walk you though a repair.

Tried with one stick only then the other (only have 2.)

Still got BSODs unfortunately. I was able to log for a few seconds in Safe Mode until a BSOD came up, although I was able to do this even before trying with just 1 stick.

Your options are limited.


When booting from the win 7 dvd push shift +F10 to get to a cmd prompt. In that command prompt type sfc /scannow (may need to be run with elevated privileges)

After typing that in getting "Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."

After seeing that, I rebooted and tried typing it in again and it just gave me the same message. Not sure if I have the elevated privileges like you said but at the top of the command prompt window it says

"Administrator:X:\windows\system32\cmd.exe"

I was afraid that might happen. One of the repairs installs you tried did not finish and the system cant run SFC until it does.


May be time for a clean install.

Is it too late for me to backup any files at this point?

If you cant log on you cant backup easily.

There are ways to back up your files using the command prompt. Let us know if you still need to backup.

To backup via the Windows 7 installation disc, start the Windows installation with your external drive plugged in and do the following steps.

1. Press Shift + F10 when the installer loads.
2. Search for the drive with the Windows directory on it. Type the following commands into the prompt:
   • C:
   • dir
   • D:
   • dir
   • e:
   • dir
3. etc. until you see Windows toward the bottom of what is listed by dir.
4. Mark down the drive letter that has Windows on it.
5. Find the external drive using the same drive letter, dir procedure (you may get the message The device is not ready for drives that do not exist)
6. Once you find the external drive layout you are familiar with, you can back up your files using the following commands (in my commands, I assume the Windows drive is C: and the backup external drive is F:, so use the appropriate drive letters for your case).
   • robocopy /s /r:5 /w:0 /xo /xj C:\folderNameToBackup F:\backupFolderName
   If you only want to back up a subdirectory, use
   • robocopy /s /r:5 /w:0 /xo /xj C:\topFolder\folderNameToBackup F:\backupFolderName
7. In the above, folderNameToBackup is the name of the folder you want to make a backup of. backupFolderName is the name you want to use for the backup. For example, if I want to backup the whole users folder, I would use:
   • robocopy /s /r:5 /w:0 /xo /xj C:\Users F:\backupUsers
   or to backup just my user
   • robocopy /s /r:5 /w:0 /xo /xj C:\Users\Mike F:\backupUsers\Mike
