recurrent BSOD and crashes even after format and reinstall of windows

I'm using windows 7 32 bit profesional
the original OS was vista but i upgraded some time ago, i have reinstalled the OS a number of tiems hoping to get rid of the problem but it keeps coming back, the last reinstall was two days ago and i formatted both partitions of my hardrive before installation, i think the windows 7 disc i used may have been quite old
i purchased the OS
The hardware is about 3 years old

My computer is always running fine untill i play any sort of game requiring a moderate amount of memory, i then either crash but can still here skype or itunes in the background and it then sometimes comes back if i hit the start button or most of the time it just freezes, if that doesn't happen i will get the BSOD, when i last checked the BSOD's that were occurring were having different causes, from different drivers, there was a point where i ran the memory diagnostic which made some changes and then my pc couldn't get to the log in screen at all so i had to reinstall again

I've been trying to fix this problem for weeks now but i am getting no where, i would greatly appreciate any help whatsoever, any extra specs are on my profile

thanks again
ashleigh

The disk hardware is blamed in the BSOD's, so please perform this free hard drive diagnostic before doing the rest of the stuff I suggest ( http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html ). If the hard drive fails the diagnostic, there's no sense in doing the rest of the steps until after you replace the hard drive. If the hard drive passes - then continue on with the rest of the steps.....

Your coprocessor driver isn't installed, please visit the nVidia website and download/install the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard: NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.49 WHQL

SP1 isn't installed and there's 70 updates after SP1 that aren't there either. Please do the following:
SP1 isn't installed, please do the following:
Installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1
1. Visit the PC manufacturer's website and update ALL drivers. DO NOT use Windows Update or the "Update drivers" function of Device Manager.
2. Check Device Manager for any unknown/disabled devices - if there are unknown/disabled devices, fix them with the latest drivers from the device manufacturer's website (not the PC Manufacturer)
3. Visit Windows Update and get all updates
4. Visit Windows Update and get Service Pack 1 (usually under Important Updates). Read these notes for installing SP1: Steps to follow before you install Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center
5. Visit Windows Update and get any other available updates
If you're having difficulties with installing a Service Pack, please use the SURTool from this link: What is the System Update Readiness Tool?

Which hard drive test did you run?

If you didn't run the Western Digital test, please run it. If you can't run the bootable test (not unusual), run the test for Windows. Run the long/extended test.

The WER section of MSINFO32 shows 4 BSOD's - 2 on the 21st and 2 on the 22nd

Finally, searching the System Log File for "bug" finds many BSOD's that haven't been captured by Windows - further evidence that this is likely to be a hardware problem.

If it's not the hard drive, then we've gotta wonder about the cabling and the hard drive controller on the motherboard itself.

If the hard drive passes, then it's either the cables or the controller on the motherboard.

Have you run chkdsk /r /f on the hard drive(s)?
If so, what were the results?

Okay, thanks, I played for a bit today with no crashes although I had nothing else open and tends to do it if I'm on Skype or have iTunes open whilst playing, though it seemed to be okay.
The time that chkdsk started automatically on startup was the first and it hasn't happened again,
I'll reply In a couple of days hopefully with more information then, thanks again for the help

I still suspect the hard drive - despite the test results.
But it can also be the cables (either data or power) or it can be the controller on the motherboard.

You've gotta replace one - take your pick!
Cables are the cheapest and easiest to replace
Hard Drive is next cheapest and easiest.

Okay, I will first replace the cables, seeing as they'd be the cheapest, any idea where I can get hold of these and which ones to buy? Would it be wiser to try and get them from eBay or get new ones from somewhere like ebuyer? Thanks

I think that you should get them from a place where you can return them. That way, should they not be the problem, you can at least get your money back.

Hard drives shouldn't make any significant noise. Are you sure it's the hard drive? If so, run the manufacturer's diagnostics on it.

Yes its definitely the hard drive, I tried a complete format and re install of windows and it is still happening, I'm currently running a full disk check now, I think this has been happening since I created a new partition on the Hard drive as I installed windows onto it from my old drive, I created a new partition to use to make it bootable and the partition was 200mb, after this i screwed everything back up in my pc and I'm pretty sure that it's been since then it's been making a kind of crunching or clicking noise whenever the pc is on.

I forgot to mention there doesn't seem to be a diagnostic for it I've done a lot of searching and can't find anything about it, the hard drive is OEM and on the box says intenso, my pc reads it as Samsung and none of these seem to have a diagnostic
