Windows Explorer crashing on right-click under x64 RTM

Mate, if ur explorers still crashing, its firefox 3.5. ive had this problem since vista x64 ultimate. that ntll.dll file is usually the crashing party. uninstall firefox 3.5 and you should be good. sincei love firefox that much, im using 3.0.10. :P
I m using firefox too but never had this issue.

Hi guys,

I'm not convinced this is Firefox 3.5 causing the crash, I have experienced the crash since moving to the RTM 64 bit (at random). After suggestions on the recent posts here I decided to uninstall Firefox 3.5 and move back to an older version of Firefox but the crashing still happens when right clicking certain folders!

Very strange

Apologies I appreciate that sounded a little ambigious..

By certain folders I simply meant random crashes, sometimes this happens on 80% of the folders I try and other times it's more sporadic. i don't think there is a pattern relating to the content of each folder as most have documents in.

I have checked my startup entries and services and removed any non-essential entries. I have also had a look through the Registry Editor for anything related to 'msvcrt.dll' and 'ntdll.dll', which are ALWAYS the culprits, that might jump out at me.

If you're still experiencing this issue, I might be able to help. You'll need this installed on the offending box:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/install64bit.mspx#

Let me know if you're keen to do a bit of crash debugging and I'll write up some steps.

You can almost always ignore the fact that crash reports finger ntdll.dll, kernel32.dll, user32.dll, msvcrt.dll, and those similar "common" DLLs. When bad data is passed into them, they directly cause crashes, but the real issue is the bad data being passed - not the DLL.

Sulfate has a point.
msvcrt usually pops up when right clicking folders with music.
ntdll justs pops up everywhere.. usually right clicking empty areas in the desktop, right clicking the recycling bin, etc.

Again, one person's culprit is different from another person's.
The applications are just at the surface of the problem.
The root is the triggering agent, and from what it seems, any number of applications can set it this thing off.

I wonder how prevalent this is and whether Microsoft has a clue about this.. :\

Add me to this list as well. I dont see any thing I installed that others havent mentioned but i will double check shortly and edit should I find anything I missed.

For me it seems to only happen when i right click an outdated shortcut, My Computer, and My Recycle bin.

Yeah, uninstalled ff 3.5, and installed the old 3.0.10, and haven't had the problem since, i couldn't find any other browser that did what i wanted, so i took a shot at an older version, and it worked :P

Ntdll.dll is the syscall interface - literally every transition from user-mode to kernel-mode has to go through those 200 or so functions. If it made sense to call one DLL more "important" than another, ntdll.dll would be _the_ most important :)

There's no evidence yet that the few people on this thread who've reported a "crash in explorer.exe" symptom are all experiencing the same root cause. We'd need to look at crash dumps to understand precisely what's happening.

I have to say since removing Firefox 3.5.2 the issue seems to have gone.
I would be interested in using the debugging tool to find the root cause, I have downloaded it but don't know what I am meant to do with it. :p

As difficult as it can be to debug ongoing crashes, it's orders of magnitude more challenging still to debug crashes which are no longer happening ;)

it would be nice to pin down exactly what is causing these right-click crashes, as i still get them from time to time, seemingly randomly.

i've never installed firefox on this incarnation, so at least i can rule that out...

Sorry but this is report is invalid.
Firefox is a usermode application and doesn't change anything in a windows
system, no files and no registry settings except the default handler for html
files which should not cause such issues.

You can download Firefox as .zip, extract and run Firefox.exe as example.

Please report your issues to Micorsoft, it's their software that is crashing

Well since I have also reported this issue to Microsoft, and they aren't having any either, I really don't know what to do.

It is very odd that this never ever happened until I used the RTM build, which I have downloaded twice now from my Technet account.
