I have yet to experience such a crash (fortunately).

Does this happen to anyone in SAFEMODE?

Is there ever anything listed in The Action Center (START | View all problem reports)?

Could we start a protest of some sort. It is extremely annoying not to mention very embarrassing when your up-to-date computer crashes in front of your client! Especially when your client has an old XP! Or are we returning to the Vista age and going to get dropped for the next bigger better OS. I also have the issue that the RC worked with all the same software almost flawlessly until I upgraded Now I feel like an idiot when I talk to people I recommended to go over to Windows 7. Very unprofessional!
A message comes up that windows is trying to resolve the issue, but that is the last you see or hear of it. this has gone on too long for them to have not noticed it. I don't know about safe mode.

Hi everyone, Just wanted to let you know that after having this problem A LOT!!! I think Microsoft released a number of updates that has got rid of explorer crashing. I noticed it after I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro, I got the crash a number of times I tryed installing my software (iTunes, Firefox etc...) then Windows installed updates, restarted my machine and every since I never got this error again. Dont know how but it was AFTER these random updates Hope this information helps.

This problem should be non-existent for anyone with all the latest upgrades to Windows 7. I have the latest version of Firefox and the latest updates of Windows 7, and have been problem free in this area for months now. It looks as though MS has sorted out the problem.
If you are still experiencing this exact problem chances are your software (Windows7 or Firefox), are not up to date versions.

"Microsoft will fix it in some random Windows Update and we'll never know the true cause"

One of the reasons is that Windows corrupts itself when the clipboard is empty, and you press right mouse button on the desktop.

When your explorer starts crashing, a simple workaround is to copy something, anything, some text from notepad, whatever.

Usually, you can't clear the clipboard from the gui, but you can from the code, this is what Firefox does in the private mode, or you can do it yourself with a dotnet command Clipboard.Clear()

Somewhere inside, windows allocates a memory block of size 0, then writes to that block, which it shouldn't do, as it corrupts the rest of the heap. This is what happens when you right click on the desktop, because the "paste" command is there, so it is trying to see if it should be enabled.

I guess, there are other reasons as well, but this one is where the bug lies with the ms.

NirSoft ShellExView solved it for me

For almost half a year, whenever I go into my computer, and do a right click or a file, or access the File and Edit menu item in the tool bar, it would crash. The error per Dr. Watson would be "faulting application explorer.exe" This computer is a backup computer, so fixing it was NOT a priority. But I hate unsolved problems/mysteries. Googled my problem, and installed a software called ShellExView. I knew the problem had something to do with context menu or shell extensions. I thought maybe it was some software I installed that messed up the right click menu. Using ShellExView, I disabled: (1) Auslogics Products Context Menu Shell Extension, (2) AlcoholShellEx and (3) Microsoft Office One note Name Space Extension. Bam! Disabling the above worked. I don't know which one caused it, and I don't care since I don't use any of the three programs anymore. Hope this helps.
