    explorer.exe did not start

When i start my computer it logs in to windows and there is no taskbar, icons, background only the windows explorer window . I was searching the web and found what was the problem and the solution for it.
The problem was that explorer.exe did not run, instead windows started the windows explorer. And when that happens you end up running windows 3.11 with aero and directX 11. This is simple to fix you just need to do the following:
(note:this should work on Vista, 7 and maybe even other windows versions)

1.press Ctrl + Alt + Delete - this will open a menu where you need to:
2.choose "Start Task Manager". When task manager is started
3.click on "File", then from the drop down list choose
4."New Task(Run..)" and when program "run" starts type
5."explorer.exe" in the white field, then
6.click "ok", this should solve your problem temporarily (windows should work fine now), if so
7.start the "run" program again and type
8."regedit" in the white field, then
9.click on "ok", this will open the Registry Editor program where you will need to
    10.open the location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ Current Version \ Winlogon -(don't forget to click on Winlogon, not just that little triangle in front of it) when you done that on the right side will be a list of files
    11.double click the "Shell" file
12.change the text in the text box "Value data:" to "explorer.exe"
12b. restart your computer and windows should run as normal.

    I hope this post helps.

    Briljant solution!

Thanks for this solution. I really didn't know where to look, even did a reinstall via update, but no success. Now it's all back in business. Thanks a lot. Does anybody happen to know how this got screwed up in the first place?

    This was garysgold's solution.

Well, what I would do next is SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker. This will replace all the modifications you have made and hopefully get things straightened out. You may have to boot into Safe Mode (Advanced Boot Options) in order to do that. If that doesn't work, then you will have to do a Repair Install unless someone has another idea.

Thanks Capt. Jack for your reply. I searched Google and Win 7 forums for garysgold reply with no luck so this helps. I tried the sfc /scannow trick but it wouldn't initialize but I have yet to try it in safe mode so that will be the next step.:)

Got to Step 6, but received the following message: 'windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item'. This is a family laptop. The User record (recently created) is an Administrator and is Password protected. I have tried switching the User permissions via my administrator User and am having no luck. Any ideas would be helpful.
