    Change desktop icon

I want to change desktop icons but when I click on 'personalize', and then 'change desktop icons' I only see five computer icons and none of my own even though I have the user files box checked. Any help?

Hi bargor and welcome to Windows 7 Forums

That's perfectly normal. The method you describe only affects the following (see image):.

    Change desktop icon-capture.png

For the others, you need right-click the icon, select Properties, select the Shortcut tab and click on Change Icon... If there are any alternative icons to display, you should see them there. Just click on the one you want to select it and then click OK twice to close the dialogue panels. In some, but not all, cases you may be prompted for administrative consent before an icon can be changed.

    For example:

My problem is that the icons I want to change don't show up on the 'change icon' drop down menu.

Which icons do you want to change?

This is what you should see if you click on Change Icon... in the first image in my previous post:

Are you saying that you're not seeing this?

Hello Bargor, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Not sure of what you mean.

What icons do you want to change?

If you mean that the icon you want to use is not there when you select the desktop icon and click on "Change Icon", then you would just need to click on "Browse", then navigate to and select the .ico file that you want to use for the icon.

Thanks much. Your pictures made me realize I was trying to change the file icon, not the shortcut icon.
