If you are talking about text glow when you mention "glow" I think it's a Hex Edit.
About the Start Menu image. Are the two examples you show, one with, one without, themes you've d'loaded? If so can you provide links to them?
no not downloaded, but i had it preinstalled with my win7 alienware edition*not orginal from theirs*

At the mo I'm fighting against half a dozen or so M$ Office 2010 "click to install" non-installs, where the key they give me is legit (hope so, it is M$), then it's not. Then the new one is, then it's not. Slowly killing my system here! A forced re-install imminent!!!
