    replacing 7 Wordpad with ME/XP/Vista Wordpad?

    I hear that it's possible, but I'm a complete novice at anything to do with DOS prompts or the registry.

    I've attempted the instructions given outside this forum but been unable to 'take ownership' of the files in order to replace them (and I'm not even sure just replacing those Wordpad system files would be sufficient--I don't have XP or Vista components anywhere on this hard drive, so I'm not sure how that would manage to give me the whole program I want)

    can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Can you point me to your source (that describes how to do it), and I will have a go, and post back

    Have you used this? ;

    How to Get the Good Old Wordpad (without Ribbons) Working in Windows 7? - Tweaking with Vishal

    In order to do that, you need to "Take Ownership" of the files you want to replace.The following will add "Take Ownership" to your context ( Right-Click) menu. Once you have "Taken Ownership" of the file, carry out the instructions given here for replacing Wordpad; Be careful how you use it!;

    Take Ownership Shortcut

    Just download the file from the "Download Link", extract the contents, and run it, ( Just click on it to run it);

    By the way, if you just want to "replace" word pad as your default editor, just get the editor you want to use, like this one for instance;

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/texter/

    or this one;

    EditPad Lite - Free Text Editor for Windows

    and set it as your default text editor.

    You can do this by using "open with" in your context menu, click on a text file. and specify whatever editor you choose as the default editor. Tick the box "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file". No other changes required;
