Windows 7: Folder icons

Folder icons

In all previous Windows versions I was able to identify all my program files with colorful icons by just right clicking the program - properties - customize - change icon - browse etc. This works the same way in Windows 7 but the icon does not change. lI have read that programs which are listed in "libraries" cannot change their icons. So I deleted the double listing of program files in "libraries" - still no dice. What gives?

Program files icons

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, it had nothing to do with my question. I want to customize my program files icons not the "library" icons. In the meantime I have learned, by accident, that the "program files" are protected, whatever that means. Why are they protected and how can you un-protect them so you can get an individual icon attached to their listing? The icon is embedded in their program folder anyway - there must be a simple way to make them visible. As I said before - it was possible in all previous Windows versions.

The icon displayed for an executable file is usually embedded in the executable itself and windows 7 gives no native way to change that other than creating a shortcut to the executable and changing the icon for that. There are 3rd party applications which can do it such as IcoFx but it is a very dangerous thing to do as it can cause the application to stop working.

go into security in the folder props, add your username with edit button, and check boxes for full control. In advanced button, take ownership of the folder. Then you can change the icon by clicking the .exe file in the folder.
