    Icons not defaulting

    Hi all

I bet this is a common question so here gose.

I was messing around with different windows 7 themes icons etc (I think a certain theme I downloaded changed the icons) now I cant cange them back to default.

I have tried numerous tutorials to restore them but nothing has worked, I noticed this in the registry:

The folder its directing to is the folder that had the custom Icons that I no longer wish to use and removed it from the windows/icons directory.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

    Regards,
    Gizza

Please first try this: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If that doesn't work, then maybe a system restore to a point before you changed them would work.

Did the scan, found a few errors and corrected them but didint fix the icons.

System restore would usually be the first thing I would try but surprsingly I have no restore points... guess that what happenns when you go on holidays and dont use your computer.

    Any other suggestions?

Actually, this worked for someone else and I'm thinking it might work for you (if the above two methods don't)

Install CCleaner (it's free), and when in the program make sure 'Thumbnail Cache' has a checkmark next to it (picture below). I would uncheck everything else unless you know what you're doing.

CCleaner is a computer cleaner and tune-up tool, but for our purposes we'll keep everything else unchecked and just worry about those annoying icons

    Thanks all for your help.

I finally solved it, playing around in TuneUp Utilities 2010 it can reset most (if not all) icons back to default using its TuneUp Styler.

    Thanks again

Hi Gizza ! Welcome aboard .

Do you use tuneup for registry cleaning ? From my using experience I can say that it kills some icons stored in the installer folder (like it's own start center icon).

You may use that tuneup foe customization or any other purpose , but better you dont use it for cleaning . It's a bit aggressive . CCleaner does cleaning perfectly .

I use Tuneup on on both my Laptop and Home PC and havent had any issues with it.

Not sure I understand when you say it kills icons in the installer folder.
At first glance it looks like its restored everything but I will continue to look around to make sure of it.
