Annoying Auto-maximising application

I have an application that tends to maximise itself on certain activities. It is a corporate app and this is all hard-coded so I cant get around it. This wasnt a prob on my old monitor, but now I want two sessions side by without having to resize it after each look up. Is there any way to force an application to stay inside a virtual screen so I can control it's behaviour in some way?
