Certain file types show a generic folder icon. Windows 7.

    Hello,
My friend has noticed on his computer that several different file types have a generic folder icon.
Same are: .JPG .PNG .BMP .RAR etc. They all have the same icon.
I have tried multiple things to fix it and so far none of them have worked. (Changing the default program, rebuilding icon cache, and a couple other small fixes. None worked so far.)

Here's the icon that shows up:

    Computer specs:

    AMD FX-8320
    16 GB RAM
    Asus M5A99X Evo R2.0
    Geforce GTX 970
    500 GB Samsung 850 Evo
    Windows 7 Professional

sorry for bumping an old thread. I'm facing the same problem now, I've also tried the fix he mentioned above. but no luck, it affects media files such as (mp3,mp4 ,png, jpg etc.) and winrar archive files they only show generic folder icon and when u set it back to default windows application it shows icon fine. registry entries under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts seem's fine too i don't know what to do please help me.

please spare my english too. thanks!
