Custom Music Folder Icon Reverts Help Please

I made a Custom Music Icon that is tied to Windows Media Player, but every few minutes it reverts back to its default icon... How can I stop this????

    Here is what happens exactly;

I change the Icon to my Custom Icon Via Properties>Customize>Change Icon>Browse

I choose my custom icon and hit Apply, it then changes to my custom icon.

a few minutes or seconds later it changes back to the default Folder icon.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated! thank you.

    Welcome to Seven Forums, Revenant

May I ask you a few questions like
    1. Are you changing the Music folder in the libraries .... or a folder containing music situated in any other location ?
    2. Are you trying to change the music file icon of windows media player ?

    My answers ....
    1. If you want to change the Music library icon, Follow the tutorial Libraries Icons - Change . But if it is any other folder , you cannot change only one folder icon as long as the folder thumbnail preview is enabled , and you are to disable the thumbnail preview . For details, read Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable .

    2. If you want to change the music file icon, follow the tutorial File Extension Icon - Change Default Icon .

It is better to Icon Cache - Rebuild after any alteration in the icons .

    Thanks for the Reply =)

No its not a Library icon, Unless you consider that it contains all my music... I had to add it to the Windows Media player Folder list, so it started out as a regular folder (New Folder).

I did figure something out though!!! Just to try it, i changed the icon to one of the icons in the Shell32.dll icon list and it never changed back to a regular folder icon.

Is it possible to add custom icons to the shell32.dll list? If not why does the folder change when its a custom and not when its in the dll shell list?

Just for learning experience if any one knows.

The best way I've found over the years to get around these issues is to make your own dll file. The best to pick on for your "base" is moricons as it only contains icons. You then start changing the included icons for your own, after, that is, you give it a "uniquename".dll. You'll need to put it in two folders on 64bit systems, system32 and syswow64.

I then, as I change icons, save the registry entries, ready for a re-install which will inevitably happen. Using this method I've never yet had an "updated" folder icon be reverted to default.

Also, not for folders but more for files. I use nirsofts File Type Manager to change a file type icon. this is one of the very few programs I've found that will make an icon change, for a file type, "stick".

As for shell32.dll, yes you can add your own icons, but just imagine you'd added 100+, and then SP1 comes along and replaces the file.... Far better to make your own which windows will never touch.

Aww I see how a windows update could pose a problem... Thank you for the ideas! I will get right on to making my own dll file and see if it fixes the problem. I am pretty sure it will.

Thank you Arc and Fimble for the support =) I will post as soon as the problem stops! *Crosses fingers*
