I am trying to move the appdata folder for the user "TOM"
When i sign in as TOM, and i try to change the location of the folder, i get a warning the files are in use and the operation is cancelled.
When i sign in as an admin, the option to move the appdata for TOM is no longer available.
how do i move this data
I suggest that you not try to move a system folder that some of your programs are using.
Is there some particular reason that you wish to move the appdata folder?

sorry typo i am not moving appdata but i am trying to moved appdata/local

i have a ssd drive which has my os. it is running out of space. i have a second data drive that has plenty of space.
my understanding was the "location" feature in windows 7 was the recommended (by microsoft) way to move the data folders that you use for a givin profile. and appdata/
I wouldn't recommend moving only the appdata folder, however, here is a forum tutorial on moving your user profile, which includes the appdata folder. Follow the tut carefully, and take note of the red box warnings.

James , thanks for the tip. I have read so many bad things about moving your user profile without doing the technique of moving the "location" of individual folders. I am a little concerned. but if people have done it and have been successful, i can try
Actually, I would think that there would be more issues from moving them separately.
A great idea is to image your system partition first, that way, if there's an issue, 20 mins and you're back in the saddle. Here are a few recommendations:

If not that (although again, highly recommended as a general practice), do create a System Restore point

I used your link User Profile - Change Default Location on how to change a user profile. i did this. created a new profile, then went to windows log in. but when i tried to log in i got
"User profile service failed the login. User profile cannot be loaded."
sorry guys, has anyone had this warning when they try to move the default user configuratin

my only remaining quesiton is about the other options. within profile list, one website suggested changing the "defaul" and "public" the new directory as well.
