    Persistent Folder Icons

    Hello,

I am working on a design project for a client and they asked to have icons made for each folder that will be on a CD that is being provided to their clients. I have the icons made, I know how to change them and they're all set. However when I throw them on a flash drive and look at them on another computer they are your standard plain jane folder icons.

My questions is this: How do I make folder icons persist from computer to computer? I realize not all computer will treat them equally. I'm really just looking for Windows 7 computers to be able to see them, but if it was broader that would be awesome as well. Any help? I surely appreciate it ; )

    Hi GreatZamo,

What program did you use to create these files and what file are they saved as?

    JaidynM,

I created them from Illustrator and converted them to .ico's from a .org site.

Do you have the original .png files? If so, can they be seen on other computers? Also, what program do you use to view your .ico files? Is this same program installed on the other computers?

I have the original .ai files and .tifs. I've tried to use .png's, but Windows is not allowing me to use them for folder icons at all.

It shouldn't. PNG files aren't meant to be used as icons. :) As I asked above:

Also, what program do you use to view your .ico files? Is this same program installed on the other computers?
Also ,how many computers doesn't this work on? Do you have a couple more computer to test on.

Sorry for the vast number of questions.

    Sorry!

Actually the .ico files readily appear as thumbnails on my desktop. However it doesn't seem any program I have will actually open the .ico file.

The files are show up as thumbnails on my wifes computer which is all windows 7.

I used this particular site to create the .ico files from exported .tifs..........iConvert: Convert ico, icns, and png icons online for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux

Unfortunately I only have two computers to test on.

ICO files should be ok on all Windows installations. You need ICNS files for Mac OS X. I don't know what Linux uses..
