Windows 7 - Classic Start Menu: Start Button appears doubled

Classic Start Menu: Start Button appears doubled

Switched to the XP-ish Classic Start Menu, plus Adjust for Best Performance, in the usual prescribed way, no third-party interface-modifiers. All looks & works fine except that the Start button itself looks like TWO buttons -- one atop the other and just slightly out of alignment (screenshot here).

Nothing’s malfunctioning, but it sure looks silly. I haven’t done anything unusual, apart from docking the taskbar on the right side of the screen. What could be causing this, and how can I un-cause it? Would Classic Shell fix this?

Grateful for any clues.

Which classic start menu software are you using?

None. Just the native-to-Windows adjustments (so far): Control Panel, System, Advanced, Adjust for Best Performance.

What does that mean? Windows 7 doesn't have a built-in classic start menu, so you must have used some software to do this. Which one?

No, nothing. What I have looks a lot like the old (XP, even pre-XP) drag-and-drop start menu, although a few 7ish features remain like the double-columned menu. I got there with Start > right-click Computer > Properties > Advanced System Settings > Performance (Settings) > Adjust for best performance. Haven't installed much at all yet and haven't touched the registry. Larger screenshot here.

Oh, I see. You are talking about the "classic" theme.
This looks like a bug in Windows. I'm pretty sure Classic Shell won't fix it.
I tried for a few minutes but were unable to reproduce the problem. This probably means it's a very specific combination of settings that's causing it. Try playing a bit with the performance settings and with the taskbar properties (small icons, lock, etc).

It could be a video driver bug as well...

Might consider trying to find a video driver update.

windows 7 doubled start button

Mark99k:
Have you found a solution? I have the same issue (see attached). Only the top image is functional. Aside from the goofy look, it doesn't seem to affect operations, and it disappears when I auto-hide the taskbar or switch out of "classic" theme. I suspect it's just a harmless OS bug, but . . .

Hey Walternouse - Not a solution per se but I did find that installing Classic Shell AND autohiding the Taskbar stops it. This isn't ideal because I work with a heavily loaded Quick Launch, so the momentary pause while the autohidden Taskbar appears is mildly annoying. Haven't decided whether to put up with the dorky button or the autohide, but since you can no longer disable always-on-top I'll probably end up with the latter.

It's so nice of Microsoft to decide how we should work, and how we should change how we work. Grrr.
