You could use Hirens Boot Cd's mini xp mode from a usb stick to just swap the files over while windows is offline
Care to elaborate on what you mean by that?
If your system is crashing it can only really be because the file isn't getting replaced. You could boot into any live Cd that would let you access files on your hard drive and just copy and replace them as windows wouldn't be running so there's no ownership/access issues.

Just tried replacing the authui.dll from an ubuntu live DVD, still black screen of doom after windows starts. How exactly did you do it the several times that you've pulled this off?

Ok it sounds like your authui.dll cannot be edited quite right then. I have done this on every install admittedly using Hirens boot cd live cd to swap the files but I've never had a problem with it. I can upload a copy of my authui.dll if you like we are using the same edition but mine also has the logon picture removed.

That might be helpful, but what do you mean by picture removed? The actual background or just the Windows 7 branding?

I have left the branding on actually so you would have to do that. It's the square box with your user account picture that I have removed aswell so all I have is a password box on the logon screen

Ok make sure you back-up your copies first. This one has no EOAC button or user account picture.

No problems if you want the logon box back I will make one with just the EOAC missing for you.
