You can set the work area to whatever you want. Unfortunately, Windows ignores it when AutoHide is enabled.
I use RocketDock so I set the work area to leave enough gap that maximized windows don't cover it. I hate the pull the mouse off the screen to make it pop over business. I'd rather have smaller maximized windows that don't cover stuff I don't want covered.
You can try
Adjust Work Area
instead of AutoHide. It's free so if you don't like it just delete it.
