In the meantime, I can say the following about the graphics editing/manipulating programs I've tried out so far:
-I find Corel Paint Shop Pro X4 really difficult to handle. Applying one's own gradient is complicated, and there does not seem to be a ctrl+click command to simply load a layer object or shape like in Adobe Photoshop (corresponds to right-clicking on a layer and choosing "Alpha to Selection" in GIMP).
-GIMP is brilliant once one is used to the user interface. Some filters still need a bit of sophistication, though (Pagecurl, for instance), and there do not seem to be many preset shapes or bevels.
-Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 (10 was just released, by the way) is my favourite besides GIMP.
So using the combination of PSE9 and GIMP, I'm perfectly happy :-)
Don't feel bad Athene I chose to try out the animation so I'm the only one to blame. It's actually quite fun, but I doubt I'm going to remember everything that I've learnt in the past few days! Besides, I'm finished now It's uploading to Photobucket now

Let me know if you want the full res (1300*300) one and I'll upload that as well Or if you (or anyone else) wants the PSD to play with then just let me know

Okay, I've finally finished it all Here it is:

I tried to save the 1300*300 version but Photoshop told me that I don't have enough RAM to do so. If you would like this, then someone else will have to download the .psd file and save it for you

WOW!!! Tom, that's stunning! I do not require the PSD file or the 1300 x 300 version.
Thank you soooooooooo much for all your time and trouble. I hope you intend to relax and get some fresh air after all that slogging! :-D
Edit: Damn! I wanted to rep you but I have to spread it around! *hits table with fist*...Ow!

Tom, it's too big to use as my sig, I tried "Option 1 - Enter the URL to the Image on Another Website" and I'm told that the file is too large It's about 5.6 MB...
