I'll do a repair install sometime this evening or tomorrow when I have access to my disk and report back to see if that fixes it.

Okiedoki, if your disk is not SP1, when doing the updates, install SP1 separately when it becomes available in the list.

Well, did a repair install. Now every icon is a blank page instead. Created another user account to see if that was the issue, all the icons are blank pages there too. Rebuilt the icon cache again, still nothing.

Guess I'll have to do a clean install when I can get an external to backup my files.

Take it as a lesson learned Iconpackager can mess up a systems icons I have had to do a clean install because of it, now I change the icons in the .dll and save a backup of each .dll much easier in the long run.

Just list all your programs and backup all data a clean install can be a good thing now and then.

That's what I have suggested to you .... you didn't have any other way out, and you were the first person whom I suggested to do a clean install for an icon related issue, coz I knew that anything else will not work for you . Before suggesting you the final step of solutions, I had to think a lot, and discuss with other persons a lot.

If you plan for a clean install, better you save all your documents in a drive other than C drive , and during partition, format C drive only.
Even I have reminded you the same in a VM, too !

UAC Shields appeared on desktop icons
Recently my desktop icons for applications which are .exe files have now got blue and yellow UAC shields. All rights for all users are assigned to these and have not changed. UAC level has not changed. The files have not changed. Scans by Avast and Bullguard show no viruses. When I set UAC...

Icons for certain programs are getting replaced with others in taskbar
Dunno why this is happening but for some reason the programs Quicktime and Adobe Reader are taking on the icon of some other random program in my task bar. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling both but it didn't seem to work. Is there anything I can do to fix this? It's really strange.

Some icons disappear and are replaced by generic ones
For some reason icons for certain programs will disapear and be replaced with the 'generic window' windows icon. I'll upload a screen shot. First it happend with opera. and now with d3doverrider. Additionally I think I was using the program when it happened, so that may be contributing to the cause.

Shields on Icons ?
Sudden appearance of Run as Admin type shields on many icons - any ideas? Malware scans - Avast, Windows Defender, A-squared, MSRT, F-Secure blacklight - Malwarebytes - all clean. Uploaded a couple of the files with shields on to Virus Total - clean.
