Hiding Desktop Icons if not viewing Desktop

I've been looking around for something that can hide my desktop icons (or basically anything except my background & bottom navigation bar) if I'm not viewing the desktop.

In other words, when I have a (not full screen) window open, I want to be able to see my desktop background but not the icons on it. When I "view" the desktop, or don't have anything on top of it, I want the icons back.

Just wondering if anyone knows about a way to do that, because I think it'd look a bit cleaner.

    Thanks,

not really the answer to your question, but have you considered:
with the focus on the 'open' window:
ALT + SPACEBAR key combo | X to maximize
ALT + SPACEBAR key combo | R to restore
ALT + SPACEBAR key combo | M to minimize

Hey dude just try the software named "Fences".....
By using this s/w u can have 2 advantages....
    1) you can customize your desktop icon by grouping it....
    2) when you are on desktop just press 'Esc' button from keyboard or just double click the left mouse pointer at any empty space of desktop. By doing this it will hide ur desktop icons and again by followibg the same procedure it vill visible....

So its nt the perfect solution to ur problem bt somewhat similar to it....
    Isn't it?????

I'll suggest a slightly different approach. I uncheck the "Show desktop icons" option which hides the icons on my desktop then I create a Desktop toolbar. I never need to actually go to my desktop, just click on the Desktop toolbar and it will popup a list all of the hidden icons. Keeps my desktop very clean looking.
