    Icons won't stay put

I have an HP computer running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

I have always placed the icons on my desktop in certain locations. I did this by right clicking on the desktop and selecting “View”. My choices under View have always been only “Medium icons” and “Show desktop icons”. This allowed me to move the icons to any place. When I turned the computer off and back on, they were in the same location (I did not select “Auto arrange icons” or “Align icons to grid”).

Suddenly, for no reason, when I turn on my computer the icons are all jumbled in a compact grid on the left side of my screen. AND THERE IS A CHECK NEXT TO “AUTO ARRANGE ICONS” EVEN THOUGH I NEVER CHECKED THIS.

Is there some setting I have to make so the computer does not put a check next to the Auto arrange icons and I can get the icons to stay put when I turn the computer off and on?

    Thanks

    hioguy,
Try restoring to your most recent restore point.

Without you ever doing anything, Microsoft has created restore points.

Unless you have used one of those super-duper clean and speed-up your computer programs, you have restore points.

Now here is how to restore to a previous restore point:
RESTORE TO A PREVIOUS SYSTEM RESTORE POINT
    1) WIN | type SYSTEM RESTORE | ENTER | NEXT
    | Choose a different restore point radio button | NEXT
    2) Show more restore pointscheckbox (lower left)
    3) Highlight the desired restore point
    4) Scan for affected programs(lower right)make a note of affected programs
    5) CLOSE | NEXT | FINISH

WIN = key with the wavy Microsoft flag on top.

Thanks, Karlsnook, for you reply. I am not a computer person and I couldn't get this to work. I am thinking of taking my computer to Staples or some other place (and pay for the service, of course) in order to get this problem resolved.

A second problem I've had (maybe it's related to my icon problem) is that I can't get Service Pack 1 to download and install on this 64 bit Windows 7 machine.

Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be appreciated.

    hioguy,
No need to take to Staples. The combined level of knowledge of the workers here exceeds anything you will get there by several orders of magnitude.

You 2nd problem is problem very related to your first problem.

First though, I need a thorough explanation of:
    Code:
I couldn't get this to work.
What did you do? step by step.

    What occurred? step by step.

Are there any other revelations you would like to make?
What other "interesting" happenings have occurred?

Do you have a Win 7 DVD? Yes/No.

Answers are need to all questions.

    thanks,
    karl
