It should be in PNG format,not gif as far as I know.

Did you follow the indicated maximum size in dimension or file size?
If you did then there should be no problem.

A "new member" is not allowed to display a sig.

When the membership status will be converted to "member" , there will be an opportunity to display the sig, but with size restrictions.

After your membership status got changed, you can reapply it. It will be in size I hope.

it should be ok, i made it 500x125 but its only 60kb so its within their parameters of 600 by 100 pixels or 146.5 KB (whichever is smaller).

In this case it will be automatically re-sized to 400x100 pixels by the forum software.
