    Change the MS volume popup?

Firstly, I've done a quick search for 'volume' in the customization forum and none of the five results were to do with what I want; apologies if this has actually been covered before.

I think the current volume fade-in thing (not sure what to call it) I have came with the driver disc for the Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse I have. Which is odd, as the software that came with it for configuration is visually more similar to WP7/W8 than the XP styled monstrosity of the attached volume indicator. I would like, if possible, to replace that volume indicator with something a bit more 21st century. I don't care if it's a Mac OS ripping-off piece of freeware that imitates the Mac volume indicator, I don't care if it's identical to the Windows Media Center volume indicator (which I don't mind that much, I just wouldn't want it taking up that much space when I'm in a desktop environment. So, is it possible to change the indicator, and if so, does anybody have any suggestions?

thanks for finding that, it works perfectly with the volume keys. Any ideas how I'd go about disabling the MS volume display thing? Removing it isn't so much of an issue now as 3RVX's size makes my eyes look at that rather than into the corner, but is it possible?

ah, thank you, now all the volume changing works exactly as I wanted it to :)

to anyone else visiting this thread with my issue, if you want to also hide the tacky overlaid volume as well as the tray one, open the Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center, click on the volume keys on the keyboard image and then slide the slider across to 'off' as shown in attached image
