    taskbar icons query

    hello everyone

Currently, i have my program buttons on the taskbar always combined, as shown here:

I would like to make use of the uncombined function, shown here:

As you can see, only the explorer icon is the same. Firefox, VLC and itunes icons return to their defaults in the uncombined option.
Is there a way to keep all icons the same as the custom ones i have installed?

    Thanks for any help

    Welcome to the Seven Forums

Go to C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar folder, are the shortcuts icons changed there?
AppData is hidden use step 3 of this tutorial to unhide it File and Folder - Hide or Unhide

So when you go from uncombined to combine or vice versa the icons change back and forth?

In your second screenshot is Firefox and VLC and iTunes are those programs open or closed?

in the second screenshot where i have them uncombined, the programs are open. When i close some of them, it looks like this:

Firefox is the only one running. You can also see that when they are not running the icon changes back to the custom one that i want.

That is because when you start the program the .exe takes over and uses the icon in .exe, the only way to get those icons to stay with the custom icon would be to edit the .exe in the program folder, example for Firefox in C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe. That is how I have done it.

Then you need to Icon Cache - Rebuild after editing them.

    thanks alot for the explanation.
Is it relatively simple editing the .exe?
Im an absolute rookie when it comes to that sort of stuff. Is there a guide you know of, or a program that can do it for me or something similar?

You would need a resource hacker of some kind so you can open up the exe and import/replace the icon then save it and put it back in the program file (you should use a copy of the exe and put it on your desktop to edit it)
To properly change a system file or .exe you need to take ownership give yourself permission and rename the old file and then copy in the new one look at Post #6 of this thread will tell you how to do it Basic Networking Information
