changing the default icon on the taskbar?

Ok, just upgraded to Windows 7. I was using rocketdock on vista and i have loads of icons i got off deviantart. How would i use the png icons in place of the default Windows 7 icons on the taskbar?

Create a new shortcut in the appropriate prgoram folder. Change icon for the new shortcut. Unpin existing shortcut. Pin new shortcut.

The .png files you have will need to be converted to windows .ICO files before they can be used.

To do this i can recommend IcoFX a freeware editor which is compatible with the 256 pixel .ico format required by Windows 7.

Once you have the required icons right click on the pinned item and then right click on the program name and select properties - here you can select change a Icon and browse to the files you have created

In addition to the above you can find some icons here ... to start you off.

All are 256 pixel .ico files password is "sevenforums" file is over 13 MB but any one is welcome to use them

It's most annoying that windows 7 does not allow the use of PNG files as icons - especially as the 256 pixel icon in the .ico file is a compressed .PNG

Maybe windows 8 or SP1

Ummm, you can also use custom PNG icons - but you'll need to use a 3rd party utility called 7stacks - Announcing: 7stacks - stacks for 7 (freeware)

I used a pair of Everaldo's crystal icons Yellow Icon : Free icons for Firefox and Thunderbird for my Fx and Tb stacks - see Announcing: 7stacks - stacks for 7 (freeware)

Thanks for the info, the icons i converted work great except for microsoft word and excel. How would i change these? When i go into properties, the "change icon" is grayed out.

Redemption.

Create a new shortcut in the appropriate program folder. Change icon for the new shortcut. Unpin existing shortcut. Pin new shortcut.
