Rocketdock: Rocket dock is a full customizeable dock, which can be customized with both skins and icons. Easy to set up and cool.

Wallpapers: A good way to a good looking desktop is to get a wallpaper in a high res or a res matching you monitor. Google is your friend, but if you are using high res remember to put the res size in the search too, this might get better results. You can also search various wallpaper site around the web.

Custom icons: Another way is to get some good looking icons, instead of the boring default ones.

Changing your start button: This can be done pretty easy, see this thread: http://www.sevenforums.com/customiza...ttons-104.html, and this tutorial: Start Menu Button - Change

Fences: a great app, that might save your time. Simple and good looking.
