    Started over from scratch.

I took ownership & gave FULL Permissions of the pnidui.dll file in the C:\Windows\System32 folder to all users, I then renamed the file to pnidui.bak. I opened Resource Hacker, navigated to 'Icon Group>3048>1033' & Replaced Resource w/a 32x32 icon of my choosing. I clicked 'Save' & closed Resource Hacker. Renamed pnidui.bak back to pnidui.dll (Resource Hacker made a pnidui_original.bak file as backup) & rebooted.

Nothing changed. I'm thinking this has something to do w/SP1, I've heard & found out that SP1 won't let some resources be changed, even when ownership gets changed.

The links to programs I listed earlier, all take an amount of CPU usage.

SP1 will let you change .dll
I just did it to the wireless icon. I can check later if I can do my desktop.

You are not doing it right . You need to copy the pnidui.dll from both C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64 to your Desktop in a folder name one System32 and one SysWOW64 then open it with Resource Hacker make the changes save it to the same folders then go to C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64 take ownership and give permission then rename the pnidui.dll to pnidui.bak.dll then put the ones on the desktop folders in C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64
Follow post #6 here Basic Networking Information
Did you make a restore point before you started if so do one to before you started. If not rename the old .dll back to pnidui.dll, rename the ones that Resource Hacker did to pnidui.bakk.dll, restart remove the ones that Resource Hacker did.

Put your .dll in a zip and post them and I will look at them.

    Bongo
Followed your directions, but I guess this is one customization I should not have attempted. As you can see in the pic, not only did the icon not change, it's missing altogether .

Even a system restore did not bring it back, I'm stumped. Below is the attached .rar you asked for, hope you can make sense of what went wrong.

Don't give up yet I know it can be done
Change the notification area icons!-.pngwe just got to figure out what you are doing wrong.
First run this SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker do option 2 first and you may need to run this up to 3 times if you have some other .dll that you have changed or have used the Universal Theme Patcher this will remove the patch and should put all the .dll back to original. After you have done this see if the originals Icon shows back up.
Then let me know and we'll start fresh. I will make a set of new .dll with your icon in it and post it here when you are ready.

Looks good, wish I could get it working. I have done a few other tweaks dealing w/.dlls (Changed Orb & Balloon Tip, changed Shutting Down & Welcome Text, customized Ctrl+Alt+Del screen & Removed Text Branding; as well as other tips: customized Logon Background & deleted default fonts that I never use.
Most of these will revert back to default if/when I run the SFC /SCANNOW Command, correct? If so, is there another way so I don't have to go through all my customizations again?

Strange, when I turned on the comfuser 1/2 hour ago, the Network icon is back!

It will revert back. Try this again.
Look at Post #6 again Basic Networking Information and follow it very slow and look at each step don't miss any. Use the .dll in the zips below. They have your icon in them. If you can clean out the other .dll but keep the originals.

Can I just follow https://www.sevenforums.com/customiza...ml#post1525656 w/the .dlls you provided/do I need to do the SFC /SCANNOW Command 1st? The pnidui.dll in my System32 & SysWOW64 folders both have the original icons in them.

That link did not go anywhere. And yes go ahead and try replacing the .dll you do not need to do that scan as long as you have the originals.
Just follow that post #6 from here Basic Networking Information like I said above follow it exactly as it is shown and double check it along the way so you don't miss any steps and you want to give ownership and permissions to your user name.

Made sure I have Full control of originals & renamed them pnidui.original.dll, took Full control of files in .zips you posted & copied them to the appropriate folders; rebooted & wala, icons have changed in both Notification area & when I customize icons. Didn't have to do the SFC / SCANNOW command.

    2 questions:
Do you get the original network icon w/circle while 1st booting then it changes (from pic~1 to pic~2)?

When we open the Network and Sharing Center, can we change the house-looking icon using the same pnidui.dll?
