If those of you with laptops or notebooks hav a 5400RPM drive upgrading to a 7200RPM one will work wonders. If possible a SSD will blow your hair back.

I don't think so Gary. 3D Renders are processor intensive a fast CPU and preferably a good graphics card are needed.

I haven't done a fractal for ages...

Nice one Keith!

I do all my GFX on my laptop, as I'm on campus 24/7 and my desktop at home with my parents only runs Gentoo (linux) and I haven't used it in ages.
If I had the money to do an upgrade, I would But laptops are hella expensive, and I still don't feel like upgrading with Win8 either (altho I can most likely downgrade).

Very nice Keith (saved)

I will say 3D Renders on my main desktop (spec as system specs) are near instant.

very kool fractal dood mix that up with some 3d renders from blender and you can have the most interesting wallpaper EVER! lol and yes to make renders and photoshop is CPU/GPU intensive! hard drive plays no role in redering also believable or not, ram doesn't factor in it either, go figure?

Nice work guys and gals

Soz Beman pal but RAM and HDD does factor in. HDD speed doesn't have much of a factor but amount of RAM (especially on 64bit machines, where the software supports it ) can dramatically increase render times in most graphics programs (this includes 3D rendering) some graphics programs use scratch discs which means HDD space factors in.

You are correct though that CPU / GPU can make a dramatic increase although a big gaming GFX card (which does speed things up) can't come close to a quadro type card which is designed for 3d rendering
