Thanks beman. I don't think there is a Fractal plugin for blender unfortunately.

Soz Beman pal but RAM and HDD does factor in. HDD speed doesn't have much of a factor but amount of RAM (especially on 64bit machines, where the software supports it ) can dramatically increase render times in most graphics programs (this includes 3D rendering) some graphics programs use scratch discs which means HDD space factors in.

You are correct though that CPU / GPU can make a dramatic increase although a big gaming GFX card (which does speed things up) can't come close to a quadro type card which is designed for 3d rendering
Thanks Nick

Keith there's 2 renders there too. after the first one took ~15minutes when I started the next one I went to the loo, made some coffee, and had dinner.
I added the red part for you.

@Kado>> yea I know there is no fractal plugin for blender, you would use the 2 software and then combine them

uhh please explain how so? I have an SSD drive and updated my ram from 8gb to 16gb BUT haven't updated my video card and I did not notice any speed increase when manipulating photo in piant.net and Photoshop! it's MOSTLY reliant on the CPU/GPU because like you you've said those quadro GPU cards are the best for photo editing

Nt sure how that would work. The fractal is essentially a 2D object which could be imported into blender but it would just be a plane. I suppose an alternative would be to use it as a texture but then it would take the shape of the object and you would lose the delicacy of the fractal.

Ho Hum. I'l give it some thought.

Best I could do ATM. Looks a bit like a glass marble with a coloured twist in it...

btw kado, you should put a glass sphere over the colored twist part to make it look like its inside a glass sphere...know what I mean?

EDIT: like this, but with blender! I think it would look muy cool!
