I don't think you can change the preview size but if you create the flare on a separate black layer in Screen blend mode you can use the move tool to reposition it afterwards.

Hiya pal, whilst you can't make the preview window bigger there is a sneaky trick.

First open your image in PS, then select "window" from the top menu then select "info" (* or press F8)
This will bring up the info window in the top right. Move your cursor on the image to exactly where you want the lens flare "right down the X and Y co-ordinates" that you see in the info window.
Now goto "filter" "render" "lens flare" in the preview window hold down ALT on your keyboard and click, you will see a box open that allows you to change the X and Y co-ordinates, now just key in the numbers you wrote down earlier .... hope this helps a bit
