Also I can you view all open programs in one screen like you can on Mac and then pick from there?

See if this tutorial is helpful,
Window Color and Appearance - Change
Hold the Windows logo key and press the Tab key...
Also you can use Alt+Tab to see or scroll through open windows.
    I suppose even Alt+Shift+Tab..

I personally like Windows logo and tabs/ rolodex effect seems to work better for me only two keys to fuse around with and more predictable

Thanks for adding the two other tutorials Brink made me remembered Ctrl+Shift+Tab
    So many different ways

There are so many keyboard combinations to accomplish the task I would check with the built in ones to avoid third party utilities,
    Internet Explorer 9 keyboard shortcuts
Keyboard shortcuts - Microsoft Windows Help

The Taskbar shows all open windows if that's what your missing ?
But I also see your using Windows 8 which I have no idea about that version.
