System File Protection, and MUI Cache issues (start button text)

    Hi guys,

I know that there's a brilliant tool that changes the Start Button text, I think from the same guys that do the orb changer too... It's a blackbox, lord knows how it does what it does, but sadly it's stopped working...

I tried a sfc /scannow on an offending VHD exhibiting the symptoms (start button {VHD} label "stuck", cannot be changed) here's the fail log from CBS

Is Explorer.exe protected? context menu "take ownership" in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\runas isn't available...

I'm currently in my old build, where the button text hasn't been tampered with (as the button was hidden, by 7+ taskbar tweaker, very good :) and I'm wondering if I can retrieve a copy of whichever files that are corrupted in the store and the build, and manually replace... (please see log, and if you know how the startbuttontextchange is successfully affected, so I can manually attempt, that'd be christmassy)

Please help if anyone can, and I'll owe you one. This isn't the first time I've made progress with tweaking Windows, only for functionality to give out.. having to restore to previous working builds as latest started suffering firewall over-protection issues, but that's another story..

Many thanks to all, and best wishes in your quests

Did the program you used to change the text create a backup of Explorer.exe. Most orb changing programs do. Have a look in C:\windows and see if there isn't a Explorer_Backup.exe or similar. What program did you use to change the text? A Guy

good q. I monitored the activity with procmon, but didn't see the interim file bein created... I suspect that the copy made does some kinda /copyAT so the time/dateStamp doesn't give anything away either... I don't think...

seems to have worked on old build

here's the xml (7mb) of the procmon (monitored FileSystem / reg) install , if anyone's good with this sort of thing... Off to try on the TARGET machine (that's cloned, and has inherited a changed {unwanted} sbtext label, and needs updating...)
