Not sure what you use for shadows in Corel, When I used it years ago I always created shadows manually -

Create a copy Layer, (Object), convert this to black and white, and adjust brightness and contrast, offset the shadow object from it's primary and move it below the primary, add an edge blur to the shadow and adjust its opacity, Finally group the object and it's shadow to give a single "object"

This allows infinite Fine control and the technique can be used for shadows or highlights on the top face of objects although this is more complex as you need to erase areas of the shadow

That's what I was doing prior,
I've been attempting to use the actual shadow menu options lately,
Not to much luck though,
I believe it's because I'm not converting my gradients to bitmaps first ?
Cheers.

Bitmaps are always going to be difficult for use on the web as the Colour gamut available is just not wide enough to display subtle variations need ed to display well

The web uses the sRGB colour space model but some browsers will restrict this even further so that on a detailed gradient over a relatively large area will show banding whatever you do.

It is normal for the default Colour Gamut used in editing applications to be better than sRGB, PS uses Adobe1998, though for Print output you can use very wide spaces such as Prophoto. Not sure of Corel, but if possible you need to match the colour space in the editor to that of the web, This will restrict the colours available in the design stage, but should mean that at least you are working closer to final output quality.

There is another major issue with web output, that is the use of JPEG compression. JPEG is not ideal for subtle colour gradations as most of the compression algorithm is actually aimed at the colour channels. In simple terms this means that a gradient will be "simplified" during the conversion to JPEG output file, which means that the colour levels used is reduced, adding to banding.

The PNG format was developed to improve the colour rendition on the web and this may be an option now that more and more sites accept this format.

AS the output algorithm used can have a major effect on the quality of output it is normally worth experimenting - create your master artwork and create a number of different output files in different formats and with different output options, These should then be previewed in a browser (more than one is an option if possible), until you find the ideal output settings for your personal style.

Professional web designers will always preview site designs in all the top browsers to ensure that the design works for the greatest range of users, and a lot of the digital artists posting on the web will produce specific output for specific Sharing / Social sites, it's more work but is considered worth it.

as an aside - I have noticed that the display quality on Facebook has recently fallen off to a level that destroys any subtlety in an image - I suppose this is acceptable with the majority of images posted but means that I will be more than likely removing the auto post to facebook I get when posting to Flickr and 500px

Both CorelDRAW X6 and Photoshop CC 2014 seem to default to sRGB.

Ah, my CC 2014 defaults to Adobe1998, but that's due to the fact that I've always used that on the cameras

I find that if I use something with a wider colour range such as ProPhoto in PS exporting it for the web can produce strange results.
