The layer effects plugin is good. It almost gives you some of the layer effects that Photoshop has.

Wouid anyone want to try to make something out of my original siggy pic which has a special place in my heart ever since I got to ride the Intel board at a San Diego surfing expo? Minimal is best. I don't even care about my screen name being integrated unless it inspires you

but working in the Tut links is important.

Also can a decent avatar be made out of this pic which is special to me also from San Diego Dog beach? It gets lost at sea now if I try it.

Great work Jamie! Something that might help with the "flat" pictures is that, when cropping them out (if that's the right word), you could use the Refine Edge tool. With that tool you can even cut out hair nearly flawless. Furthermore you can give it a small feather so that the final cut-out won't look that flat:)
