Arranging desktop icons without the use of 3rd party tools

Newbie question...

Am trying to rearrange my Windows 7 desktop.
Have noticed a LOT of different 3rd party tools to make the desktop look fancier, such as 'Fences' and... as said.. a lot of other tools.

But again, it is adding another tool.

have created a folder on my desktop, copied a few desktop links into that, double clicked it, but it simply has an Explorer (=not fancy) look.

Seems Windows itself does not have anything 'built in'?
(like creating a window and adding links into that)

Thanks

Arranging icons on the desktop.
Hi there! I was just wondering, if there is any way to change the automatic placement of icons on the desktop? I mean, normally, when you drag stuff to the desktop or download something, it is placed in the upper left corner and down. So I was thinking if there was any way I could possibly...

Why recommend 3rd-party search tools?
I didn't want to start a flame war (which is about where I'm headed in this thread), so I figured I'd rather make this post in the Chillout Room, where it belongs. But I seriously needed to ask the question: Why do some member on this forum (and others) recommend 3rd party search tools rookie...

Arranging user folder icons..?
I just recently installed Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, and I can't figure out a way to arrange the folders in my user folder, or my documents folder, etc. The only files I seem to be able to arrange are my desktop. I have a lot of documents folders set up in a very specific way since windows 95...
