Is it possible to embed/set a webpage on my desktop (permanently)

Hi guys,

I know the following may sound unusual but it was possible "way back when.." (circa win2k???) what I want to do is set a webpage as my desktop in much the same was that you can set a picture as the desktop...

From memory the webpage could be resized etc the same way that the picture could, but the functionality of the webpage remained accessible directly from the desktop - (similar to a widget on a smartphone) would click links etc which would then open a browser window and bring you the webpage...

Would appreciate if anyone had thoughts on it - as it would be very useful at the minute!

thanks,

Lharts

This feature (Active Desktop) was discontinued in Vista where Windows Gadgets replaced some of the functionality. But Gadgets were themselves abandoned by MS because of security flaws.

If you have some experience in HTML programming you can build your own gadget that will act somewhat like Active Desktop (more info : Developing a Gadget for Windows Sidebar Part 1: The Basics (Windows) ). Other than that, you'll have to turn to 3rd party applications to replicate what you want.

Here's a link that might help (I haven't tested any of these software) :

Active desktop was released before it's time. To work well it required a fast full time Internet connection which is now common. But in a day when most people used dial up for Internet access it never became popular. It may come back in some future OS.
