File Explorer Windows Automatically Open in New Window?

I am noticing that when I click to open a folder in the File Explorer, the folder automatically opens in a new window.

Then if I click on another folder or file, that automatically opens in a new window as well and so on. It is annoying to have to keep closing windows.

I cannot locate how to change that behavior back to where I had it where it only opened in another window if I clicked for it to do so and not by default.

I am not seeing that as an option in the menus.

Any suggestions or advice here?

Hi sunrise12,
you can certainly turn that off, go to any folder or file and press "alt", then press T (Tools) and then press O (Folder Options), this is your folder options, the first thing you come to is this :

File Explorer Windows Automatically Open in New Window?-folder-options.jpg

select "open each folder in the same window", apply and click ok and that should fix this for you.

Oh, yeah, "Folder Options" ... that is what I was trying to find. Thanks!

It worked for a second but did not stick.

So, I opened the "Folder Options" directly and selected "Open in Own Window" and saved it and it still will not stick.

Strange.

Maybe that is something that was affected by the recent weird RunOnce Startup registry changes that occurred in my computer the other day.

The setting is correctly set to "Open each folder in the same window" but folders open in a new window anyway.

Is there anything I can do to fix it?

I guess that would involve editing the registry.

not sure, i'm assuming something underlying is happening, have you done all relevant tests, virus scan/malware scan/etc.....

I ran AVG, SuperSpyWare and ... just now ... Malwarebytes.

None of them detected any problems. Yay!

I keep the computer as clean as possible by not going online with it except to download updates quickly or emails but it is mostly offline.

I also do not install any junkware on it and as careful as possible with it.

However, the other day out of the blue, WinPatrol suddenly alerted me of several new once-run startup registries and asked if I approved them, and I didn't recognize them or approve. Then the system crashed, and I had to reboot. I was offline as usual when this occurred.

The behavioral change with the folders is probably related to that incident. I am not noticing anything else that is odd.

Just a note, it's File Explorer in Windows 8/8.1 but still Windows Explorer in Windows 7 and earlier.

Try running the System File Checker, see if it finds any issues
